“Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Games” is the highest sporting civilian honor of the Republic of India, bestowed to sportspersons or teams for their dynamic performance in sports disciplines that are included in International competitions. The award instituted in 1991,was named on Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.
The accolade is awarded annually to encourage sportspersons for further successes. A twelve member selection committee constituted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports decides the winners in each discipline. The honor comprises a medal, a certificate, and cash prize.
