Ignacious 'Ignace' Tirkey

Ignace Tirkey, born on May 10, 1981, in Sundargarh, India, is a revered Indian field hockey player. Hailing from Odisha, Tirkey's journey in hockey began in his childhood, showing promise and dedication. He rose through the ranks to become a key member of the Indian national hockey team. Tirkey's exceptional skills as a defender earned him recognition on both national and international stages. He represented India in prestigious tournaments like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Hockey World Cup. Tirkey's leadership and resilience on the field have made him an inspiration for aspiring hockey players, particularly in Odisha.

His Achievements:-

• Ignace gave his crucial contribution to the team 'Chennai Veerans' win the Muruguppa Gold Cup in 2001, held in Chennai.
• Also contributed his best to the team in winning the 2002 National Games in India that took place in Hyderabad
• Won the 2003 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup event with the team that was held in Kuala Lumpur
• Received the “Ekalavya Puraskar” in the year 2003
• Bestowed with the “Sportsman of the Year” award in 2004
• Recognized as a crucial member of the Indian team that was ranked 7th at the Summer Olympics of 2004, held in Athens
• Received the prestigious Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2009  
• Received the fourth highest civilian honor "Padma Shri" by the Government of India in 2010
