Elaine Tanner

Elaine Tanner is a former Canadian competitive swimmer. Her contribution to sports made her the officer of the Order of Canada in 1969. She has broken records in 100m butterfly, 4×100m freestyle relay and 4×100m medley relay at the Pan American Games, 1967. The swimmer bagged silver and bronze medals in the 1968 Summer Olympics.

Here are some of her career achievements:

• Bagged gold medals at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 1966 ( Categories: 110 yds butterfly, 220 yds butterfly, 440 yds individual medley and 4×110 yds freestyle relay events)
• Won silver medals in 110 yd backstroke, 220 yd backstroke, 4×110 yd medley relay events of the events at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 1966
• She became the first woman ever to achieve seven medals at the Commonwealth Games.
• Elaine became ASA National British Champion in 1965 in the 110 yards butterfly.
• In 1966, she was honoured with the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's best athlete.
• In 1967, Elaine competed at the Pan American Games and bagged two gold medals ( 100m and 200m backstroke) and three silver medals ( 100m butterfly, 4×100m freestyle relay and 4×100m medley relay) with her supersonic performances.
• At the Pan American Games, 1967, she broke two world records.
• Clinched two silver medals (100m and 200m Backstroke) and one bronze medal (4x100m freestyle) in the Olympics, held in Mexico.
• Made an officer of the Order of Canada in 1969
• Elaine's name was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1971
• Since 1972, Elaine Tanner Award is given to the top junior female athlete of Canada
