Born on 27 October 1977, Kumar Sangakkara is a left-handed top-order wicketkeeper-batsman, cricket commentator and former Sri Lankan captain. Sangakkara is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, scoring 28,016 runs in international cricket in all formats over a 15-year career span. He has several test records and is one of the fastest players to reach various run milestones in test cricket.
Some of his major career achievements:-
- His partnership with Mahela Jayawardene holds the current record for highest partnership for any wicket (624) in Test cricket.
- Became the 2012 ICC Cricketer of the Year (Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy)
- In Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, Sangakkara was selected as leading cricketer of the world for the 2012 and 2015 editions, becoming the second player to have won this award twice.
- Bagged Man of the Match award in the finals of 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and helped Sri Lanka to claim their maiden title
- In 2016, he was rated as the Greatest ODI player of all time in Cricket Australia's public poll.
- Appointed as the President of the MCC in 2019, becoming the first non-British person to the position since the club was founded in 1787.
