Joaquim Carvalho Cruz was born on 12th March 1963. He is a former middle distance runner from Taguatinga, Brazil. Joaquim started running at the age of 13 and in 1981, made a junior world record of 1:44.3 min in 800m.

- Clinched a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles
- Secured a silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games, held in Seoul
- Also, competed at the World Championships of 1983 which was held in Helsinki. He won a bronze medal.
- Won a gold medal in the 1,500m event at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis
- Again, won a gold medal in the 1500m event at the 1995 Pan American Games, held in Mar del Plata
