Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister

Roger Bannister, born on March 23, 1929, in Harrow, England, was a pioneering middle-distance runner. He made history on May 6, 1954, by becoming the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, a feat many believed impossible. Bannister's record-breaking run at the Iffley Road track in Oxford captivated the world and transcended the sport of running. • Bagged a bronze medal in the 800 m category, at the 1950 European Championships, held in Brussels
• Bagged a gold medal in the 1500 m category, at the 1954 European Championships, held in Bern
• Won the gold medal in the 1-mile category at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, held in Vancouver
• Named an Honorary Freeman of the London Borough of Harrow, in the year 2004
• Honored with the Freedom of the City of Oxford, in the year 2004
• Became the Member of the Order of the Companions of Honor in the 2017 New Year Honors
