Born on 1st March 1952, Leigh Raymond Matthews is a former Australian Rules football player and coach who has played for Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League.

Here are some of his career achievements:

  • Part of the team that won the VFL in 1971, 1976, 1978 and 1983, held in Melbourne, each year. He captained the team in 1983
  • Member of the All-Australian Team in 1972
  • Won the Coleman Medal in 1975
  • Won the VFLPA MVP award (which is also known as the Leigh Matthews Trophy) in 1982
  • His name was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in the year 1996
  • Recognized as the "best player of the 20th century" according to AFL
