In 1950, the arena hosted Germany's first international match after the World War II. The game was played against Switzerland and was witnessed by the record number of spectators (103,000).
The Mercedes-Benz Arena is primarily a football stadium. It is located in Stuttgart, Germany and is the home to the German Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart. The stadium was opened on 23rd July 1933 and has a maximum capacity of 60,469 for league matches. Initially, the stadium was known as the "Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion" (1993-2008) and as "Neckarstadion" before 1993. It has natural grass surface.
Significance
- The Mercedes-Benz Stadium was one of the stages to host the 1974 FIFA World Cup matches. It hosted four group matches of the tournament.
- In 1988, Mercedes-Benz Arena hosted one group stage match and a semi-final match of the UEFA Euro Championship.
- It was one of the venues to host significant matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
- From 2006 to 2008, the facility was the host to the International Association of Athletics Federation's (IAAF) World Athletics Final.
- On 3rd June 2013, the stadium witnessed the mesmerizing performance of Depeche Mode during her "Delta Machine Tour".
- In 1977, Klaus Fischer (a German former footballer) scored Germany's "ARD Goal of the Century" at the stadium.
- The stadium hosted the finals of the European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League) twice: in 1959 (between Real Madrid and Stade de Reims) and 1988 (PSV Eindhoven and S.L. Benfica).
- In 1993, it hosted the World Athletics Championship.
- In 1986, the stadium hosted the European Athletics Championship. In this tournament, Yuriy Sedykh (a former track and field athlete) set the world record in hammer throw event.
