It was originally named after Hugh Inman Grant, son of a well-known Atlanta Merchant, John W. Grant, who was the original benefactor of the stadium. In 1988, the stadium was named after Bobby Dodd, who has the most number of wins as the coach of the Georgia Tech. However, the playing surface is called the Grant Field till date.

Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field is a football stadium. It is located in the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. The stadium has been the home venue for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team which is always referred as the “Ramblin’ Wreck”. The ground was in rudimentary form in 1905 but established as a complete stadium in 1913. Yellow Jackets participate in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Bobby Dodd is the oldest stadium in FBS and has more home wins than any other stadiums in FBS. The architect of the stadium was Charles Wellford Leavitt.
Significance
- On October 5, 2016, Major League Soccer expansion team Atlanta United F.C. declared that they would play their matches at this stadium until the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is under construction.
- Grant Field is the oldest on-campus site which has been used for college football in the Southern United States. It is also the oldest in FBS.
- On October 7, 1916, Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland College by 222-0 in the most lopsided game in American Football history.
- On November 29, 1917, Georgia Tech defeated Auburn 68-7 on this ground to end the first undefeated United National Championship season.
- On November 15, 1952, Georgia Tech defeated one of the highest ranked team Alabama by 7-3 in a closely matched defensive game in the stadium.
- Georgia Tech again defeated top-ranked Alabama by 7-6 at the ground on 17 November 1962.
- On October 17, 2009, Georgia Tech again defeated any top-5 team on their home ground for the first time after 1962 on this ground by defeating Virginia Tech 28-23.
