The National Basketball Association (NBA) presents its annual awards to recognize the outstanding achievements of its players, teams and coaches. The NBA's championship trophy was proclaimed in 1947 and the first individual awards (Rookie of the Year & All-Star Game MVP) were inaugurated in 1953. The award is named in the honour of Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes who played together on the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals from 1955 to 1958 until Stroke's career had a pause as he fell down during the game against the Minneapolis Lakers and suffered a head injury. Strokes later became paralyzed because of post-traumatic encephalopathy (a brain injury that damages the motor-control centre). Twyman then helped Strokes as he became his legal supervisor and lawyer until Strokes' demise in 1970.
