Situated in the heart of Bhubaneswar, the Kalinga Stadium is well-known as multi-sports venueof Odisha. The foundation stone of the stadium was laid in 1978 by an Indian politician, aviator and businessman Biju Patnaik. It has been the home stadium for Indian men's as well as women's national field hockey team, and also for Kalinga Lancers that performs in Hockey India League.
Trivia
The stadium has India's first newly built Olympic standard hockey turf of pink and blue colour.
Significance
The stadium includes an 8-lane athletics track, gymnasium and a sports hostel for players.
The stadium has hosted significant events of the Asian Athletics Championship of 2017, where around 560 athletes from 41 nations came to participate.
In 2014, it witnessed the jaw-dropping matches of the Hockey Champions Trophy and was also selected to host the Men's Hockey World Cup of 2018.
The Asia Rugby Women's Championship of 2018 was also held here from 26th-28th October. The same year, in February and March, it has hosted the India F1 Futures tennis tournament, organised by Odisha Tennis Association.
