Stadium of Australia is one of the prominent sports arenas of Australia which is a multi-purpose stadium, located in the Sydney Olympic Park. It is commonly known as ANZ Stadium (the name given by Australia and New Zealand Banking Group) and previously as Telstra Stadium. It is also regarded as the "Olympic Stadium" constructed in March 1993 at the cost of $690 million to host the Summer Olympics of the year 2000. It is the second largest stadium in Australia, after the Melbourne Cricket Ground that represents many international cricket events such as the Ashes series, World Cup matches along with many BBL matches. It has been the home stadium of New South Wales cricket team since 2014 after BBL cricket team "Sydney Thunders". This stadium provides a multi-sport utility platform to perform multiple sports in the same stadium with slight modifications. In order to provide the facility, significant alterations were carried out for the games requiring an oval field such as cricket and Australian Rules football. As a result, it leads to removal of two wing stands and the athletics track with an introduction of movable seating section.

Trivia

The stadium was initially named "Stadium Australia" but later changed to "Telstra Stadium" and then to "ANZ Stadium" due to various sponsorship deals.

Significance

The stadium also witnessed the first American football match, held in southern hemisphere in 1999 between San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos.
The stadium hosts "Big Bash League" matches and is the home venue for "New South Wales".
The stadium has hosted the first ever international Twenty20 match between India and Australia in February 2012.
Apart from sports, the stadium is also used for concerts with star performers such as AC/DC, Taylor Swift, and Eminem.
It hosted the first Monster Jam Australia event in 2003.
Stadium Australia was designed in 1993 to host the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The Super Rugby final of 2014 between "Canterbury Crusaders" and "New South Wales Waratahs" was performed here, witnessed by a record Super Rugby crowd of around 61,800.
