The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium is named in honor of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh who was a landlord from Sonakhan. He headed the 1857 War of Indian Independence in Chhattisgarh.
The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, also known as Naya Raipur International Cricket Stadium is a cricket ground situated close to the Swami Vivekananda Airport in the city of Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh, India. It is the fourth-largest cricket stadium in the world with a total seating capacity of 50,000. The ground is owned by the Government of Chhattisgarh and operated by the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangha. The construction of the stadium started in the year 2001 and finished in 2003. It was officially opened on 11th September 2008. It has been the hometown for the Chhattisgarh cricket team since 2009.
Significance
- The second IPL match was played on 1st May 2013 between the Delhi Daredevils and the Kolkata Knight Riders. The stadium refrained from charging entertainment tax to ensure greater success.
- Though the stadium was inaugurated in 2008, the ground hosted its first match on 21st of November, 2010. A practice match was played between the Canada National Cricket team and the Chhattisgarh cricket team.
- The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium hosted its first IPL match on 28th April 2013 between the Delhi Daredevils and the Pune Warriors. The Delhi Daredevils won the match after beating the Warriors by 15 runs.
- The stadium hosted eight T20 matches of the 2014 Champions League Twenty20, including two group stage games and six qualifier matches.
- A half-marathon was held here on 16th December 2012 with a theme “Let us run” to mark Vijay Diwas.
