The (IPL) Indian Premier League is a professional franchise-based T20 cricket league in India, played during April-May every year by franchise teams, representing different Indian cities. The league was founded in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI). The IPL ranks sixth amongst all sports leagues and is the most-attended cricket league in the world. In 2010, it became the first sporting contest in the world to be broadcasted live on YouTube in 2010. In 2008, a consortium consisting of India's Sony Entertainment Television (Set Max) network and Singapore-based World Sports Group acquired the global broadcasting rights of the Indian Premier League. The IPL Governing Council manages the tournament.

Competition Format

Minimum squad strength of 16 players should be maintained, with one physiotherapist and a coach.
A maximum of ten foreign players can be included in the squad and four in the playing eleven.
At least fourteen Indian players have to be included in each squad.
The competition consists of various stages: The League stage, Playoffs (Qualifiers and Eliminator), and the Grand Finale. Currently, Ten teams participate in the tournament.
During the league phase, each team plays each other twice in a home-and-away game.
After the league stage, the top four teams qualify for the Playoffs.
Qualifier 1: The first two teams from the league phase play each other in the first qualifying match. The winner goes straight to the IPL final, and the loser gets another chance to qualify for the final by playing the second qualifying match.
Eliminator: The third and fourth placed teams from the league phase play against each other in the Eliminator match. The winner of the Eliminator round moves towards the second qualifier while the loser is knocked out of the tournament.
Qualifier 2: The second qualifying match is played between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator. The winner of the Qualifier 2 advances to the final.
Final: The final of the IPL is played between the winners of the two Qualifiers where the winner is crowned the Indian Premier League champions.
