The National Stadium of Pakistan is primarily a cricket stadium, located in Karachi, Pakistan. It serves as the home ground for the national and domestic cricket teams. The stadium has a seating capacity of 34,228 spectators. In the recent past, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) had announced the possibility of plans to increase the capacity up to 90,000. The Pakistan cricket team has an excellent Test record on this ground. In a span of 50 years, the Pakistan Cricket team has played 40 Test matches, winning 21 of them. The first game was played in the year 1955 and in 1980; it hosted the first international competition. The national stadium has also hosted many World Cup matches.

Trivia

Prominent West Indian cricketer Sir Viv Richards scored his famous 181 against Sri Lanka in the 1987 World Cup match at this ground.
One of the most successful Indian cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar played his first Test match on this ground.

Significance

The venue has witnessed Mohammad Yousuf scoring his 9th century to break Sir Viv Richards’s record for the most number of runs in a calendar year.
In 2009, it witnessed the highest team total by any team. Pakistan posted a mammoth score of 765 against Srilanka in a Test match. The same year, Younis Khan scored the maiden triple century for Pakistan against Srilanka. It was marked in the history as the highest Individual score in a Test match held here.
The stadium hosted a total of 6 ODI (One Day International) matches during the 1987 and 1996 Cricket World Cup.
