The Alberto J. Armando Stadium is a well-known stadium of association football, situated in the La Boca district of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is popularly known as 'La Bombonera'. In English, it means 'The Chocolate Box'. It is named so due to its unique shape that resembles a chocolate box. It has a flat stand on one side and steep stands on the other three sides. The construction of the stadium started on 18th February 1938. José Luis Delpini, Viktor Sulčič, and Raúl Bes were the chief architects who contributed and built the stadium over a span of two years. It was opened for the spectators on 25th May 1940. The Argentine sports club "Boca Juniors" owns the stadium. The Alberto J. Armando Stadium underwent a major renovation in 1995. The stadium has been the home ground for Boca Juniors, an Argentine football club since 1940.

The Estadio Alberto J. Armando’s pitch size which is 105m x 68m, meets the minimum requirement of FIFA regulations.
The stadium was named after the Boca Juniors Football Club by which it was known from 1940 to 1986. From 1986 to 2000 the stadium was designated as Camilo Cichero, in honor of the president under whose observation the stadium was built.

Significance

The arena played host to the 1958 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match between Argentina and Chile, held on 20th October 1957.
It hosted two of the 1970 FIFA World Cup Qualifier matches between Argentina and Peru on 24th and 31st August 1969.
The 1974 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match between Argentina and Bolivia was held here on 9th September 1973 and between Argentina and Paraguay on 7th October 1973.
The stadium also hosted the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier match between Argentina and Colombia on 16th November 1997.
It hosted the Copa Lipton match between Argentina and Uruguay on 14th November 1956.
