The stadium was known as the Estadio Olímpico Chateau Carreras till 2010. In October 2010, it was renamed as "Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes" in honor of Mario Kempes (the top scorer of the 1978 FIFA World Cup).
The Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, situated in Chateau Carreras district, Córdoba, Argentina is a stadium also referred as Estadio Olímpico Chateau Carreras. The stadium was initially known as the Estadio Córdoba. The construction work for the stadium was commenced in 1976 and it finally opened on 16th May 1978. It underwent a major renovation in 2011 and reopened to host the Copa America. The stadium has served as home for Club Atlético Talleres and Club Atlético Belgrano and was also used by Argentina national football team. The Córdoba Province owns the stadium.
Significance
- The 1982 World Boxing Association’s World Super-Bantamweight title fight was held at this stadium. It was a fight between Sergio Palma and Jorge Lujan.
- The stadium hosted three Group 4 matches, two Group 2 matches and three Group A matches of the 1978 FIFA World Cup. These matches were held in June 1978.
- It played host to three Group B matches and a semi-final match of the 1987 Copa America.
- The venue has also witnessed two Group B matches, one Group A match and a quarter-final match of the 2011 Copa America.
- Five group stage matches, two matches of the round of 16, one quarter-final match and a semi-final match of the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship were held here.
- The stadium saw Iron Maiden and Paul McCartney phenomenal performances in the year 2016.
- The stadium hosted some special stages of the "Rally Argentina" which is a motorsport event and a round of the World Rally Championship in the years 2006 and 2007.
