In 1971, the stadium hosted table tennis matches between the national teams of China and the USA. These matches were a part of the exchange program between two countries and is known as the Ping Pong Diplomacy.
Located in 56 Zhongguancun South Street, Beijing, China, the Capital Indoor Stadium was built in 1968 which is also used for multi-purposes. Previously, the stadium had a floor space of 53,000 square meters, but recently it has been expanded to 54,707 square meters. The stadium has a total capacity of 17,345 people (as of 2017).
Significance
- The stadium also hosted the volleyball events of the 2008 Summer Olympics.
- The stadium underwent a major renovation to meet the standards of 2001 Summer Universiade.
- On 17th October 2004, the stadium hosted its first National Basketball Association (NBA) game held in China. Around 17,903 spectators witnessed the match.
- In October 2010, the South Korean boy band "Super Junior" performed two of their concerts at the stadium at different times. The first show "Super Show 3" was hosted with a sold-out crowd of 14,500 whereas the second show "Super Show 5" was witnessed by 13,896 people.
- The stadium hosted the first ever professional football game of All-stars from the Arena Football League. This event was arranged to promote the new AFL China League which is currently known as the China America Football League.
