The name of the tournament has been given in memory of Harry Hopman who was the first player and a prominent coach of the Australian team.

The Hopman Cup that started in the year 1989, is an annual tennis tournament, held in the city of Perth in Australia. There is Davis Cup for men, Fed Cup for women and the Hopman Cup is the tournament where teams consist of both men and women. Under the guidance of coach Harry Hopman, Australia won 15 Davis Cup titles in a span of 32 years between 1938 and 1969. The tournament has been sanctioned and organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Competition Format

The tournament is played between 8 teams, and each team is represented by one male and one female player from the same country.
If any of the players selected for the tournament is unable to participate, then he/she would be replaced by another player from the same country with a lower ranking.
The teams competing in the tournament are divided into two groups. The teams in a group play against each other in a round-robin method.
Every match-up between the teams consists of three matches. These are one men’s singles, one women’s singles and one mixed double. The mixed doubles match is always played as the third or last match.
All the matches are played in three sets. The top two teams from the groups play for the championship title.
In season 2005-06, the Hopman Cup became the first major tournament in tennis which implemented the system of giving right to a player to challenge a call by the umpire. Whenever there is a challenge, the decision is immediately reviewed.
