The awards are presented annually by the United States Olympic Committee to the sportspersons who have performed exceptionally well in one of the Olympic or Paralympic sports.
Following are the categories for which the award is presented:-
- Sportsman and woman of the year (awarded since 1974)
- Team of the Year (added in 1996)
- Olympic Coach of the Year
- Male Paralympic Athlete of the Year
- Female Paralympic Athlete of the Year
- Paralympic Team of the Year
- Paralympic Coach of the Year
