Halberg awards are given annually to recognize New Zealand's best athletes.
The award was instituted in the year 1949 by "NZ Sportsman Magazine's" originator Jack Fairburn but was discontinued along with the publication of "NZ Magazine" in 1960.
It was then restarted by the Helberg Disability Sport Foundation which is named after the famous athlete Sir Murray Halberg and is presented at a dinner which traditionally revolves between the New Zealand cities of Christchurch, Dunedin, Auckland, and Wellington and which also has been broadcasted live on television in recent years.
