RLIF is the global governing body to conduct and manage and preside all the important aspects of the sport worldwide following which, the sport takes in 68 national associations. The federation is responsible for the rules of the game, related organisations and their management along with the major international tournaments primarily the Rugby League World Cup. Two regional associations also affiliated with the Federation are the Asia-Pacific Rugby League Confederation (APRLC) and the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF).
The sports started in 1895 in England and the Imperial Rugby League Board was established in 1927. In 1935, the French rugby league proposed a constitution to establish an international Federation. The Rugby League International Federation was established in 1998.
