Badminton World Federation, also called the BWF, is the world governing body of various badminton sports played around the world. It is officially recognised by the IOC (International Olympic Committee).
The federation which started as IBF (International Badminton Federation) in the year 1934, with only nine members initially (i.e. Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales), later turned out to be the most significant governing body for the sports of badminton with 176 member nations around the world.
It works in cooperation with five different regional governing bodies to develop and promote the sports of badminton around the world. They are -
