The 2021 Tokyo Olympics are facing the possibility of cancellation. Government officials have privately admitted that it is impossible to hold the Olympics during the coronavirus pandemic. The main reason for the Tokyo Olympics postponement from 2020 to 2021 was the pandemic, but as the pandemic continues, it seems unlikely that the Olympics will be held in June 2021.
According to the reports, a senior official of the Government of Japan has acknowledged that there is a consensus that hosting the Olympics in this situation is very difficult and all efforts will now be made to host the 2032 Olympics. Paris and Los Angeles will host the 2024 and 2028 edition of the Olympic Games.
In the past few months, Japanese government officials and Olympic organisers have been keen to hold the event regardless of the coronavirus situation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, Japan is in the midst of the third wave of coronavirus, with 5447 cases and 5,000 deaths in the last 24 hours.
According to a survey conducted by several Japanese media, 80% said that the Olympics should not be held.
However, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga denied it and said, "We clearly deny that there is any truth (about the possible cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics). The Tokyo Games will be a symbol of humanity overcoming the novel coronavirus and a chance to showcase Japan`s reconstruction from the devastating Northeastern earthquake and tsunami to the world. We will be well prepared on the measures for the infection. We are determined to work closely together with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, and the IOC to realise a safe and secure Olympics."
