Shinty Rules

Match Duration

The match consists of two halves of 45-minutes and a 10-minute half-time break. The ball must be in play when each half ends.

Start Of Play

The match is started by a toss whose winner decides the choice of ends after which the throw up takes place in which the ball is thrown up by the referee to a minimum height of 12 feet between two opposing players standing at the center spot at least 3 feet apart with their camans crossed above the head level.  

Fouls: A foul is committed by a player if he/she-

• Kicks the ball

• Kicks, pushes, trips, obstructs or attacks an opponent

• Uses caman in a violent manner like hitting an opponent with it.

• Throws the caman, joins the match without it, holding or blocking the opponent’s caman.

• If the ball is handled by hands, arms or head except by the goalkeeper.

Cautionable Offences

The referee may caution the players for-

• Reckless swinging of the caman

• Showing a threatening attitude

• Obstructing or charging an opponent in a violent manner

• Using foul language, time wasting, shirt pulling, and so on.

Suspensions

A player may be sent off the field if he/she:-

• Shows a violent conduct

• Uses abusive or offensive language

• If found guilty of a second cautionable offence after already receiving a caution.

Off-Side

An attacker is said to be offside if he/she is within the 10-yard area when the ball enters that area.
