The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is a leading cricket ground that has witnessed many international matches since its opening in 1974. Originally built with a capacity of 45,000, it can now hold up to 32,000 spectators only after successive renovations. This stadium witnessed its first cricket Test match in 1974 when West Indies toured India. This match became memorable for Clive Lloyd’s unbeaten 242; while India lost by 201 runs. India won its first Test on this ground two seasons later against New Zealand. The Stadium witnessed its first ODI match in January 1987 when India played against Sri Lanka. This cricket stadium has Garware Pavilion End and Tata End as its two ends. It also has stands named in honour of prominent Indian cricketers including Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Vijay Merchant.
