Center Parc Stadium, also previously known as Georgia State Stadium and Turner Field, is a sports stadium located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Originally built as Centennial Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Summer Olympics, the venue hosted the Games’ opening and closing ceremonies as well as track and field competitions. Following the Olympics, it was converted into a baseball stadium and reopened in 1997 as the home of the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Construction began on July 10, 1993, and the original Olympic stadium had a seating capacity of approximately 85,000 spectators. After the Games, the venue underwent extensive modifications to accommodate baseball, reducing its capacity to around 49,000. Turner Field hosted the Atlanta Braves from 1997 through the 2016 season and staged several major baseball events, including the 2000 MLB All-Star Game and the 1999 World Series.
Following the Braves’ departure in 2016, Georgia State University acquired the stadium and redeveloped it for college football. The renovated venue opened as Georgia State Stadium in 2017 and was renamed Center Parc Stadium in August 2020 through a naming-rights agreement with Center Parc Credit Union. The stadium currently accommodates approximately 25,000 spectators and serves as the home field of the Georgia State Panthers football team. It also hosts other sporting events and selected community activities, continuing the site’s role as a major sports venue in Atlanta.
Center Parc Stadium represents an example of a major sporting venue being adapted for a different purpose. It is also notable for being the second former Atlanta Braves ballpark converted into a college football venue, following Nickerson Field in Boston, which previously served as a baseball stadium before its conversion for university athletics.
