Austria's only artificial whitewater venue that is used for canoe and kayak slalom competition, known as the Vienna Water Sports Arena. It also serves as a family water park that comprises of raft trips with appropriate guides and practice provisions for individual boaters as well. The arena rests on the Danube Island that is situated across the Danube in the city and keeps pumping its water source from the New Danube river channel itself. This water sports arena started hosting games from August 2013 following which, the European Canoe Slalom Championship was held here in 2014. The managing agent of the Vienna Water Sports Arena is the Austrian Canoe Federation. It comprises of bleachers, canoe lifts, and is shaped like a loop having all advanced facilities for water sports. Its concrete channel has vertical sides, steps and adjustable flow diverters. To save the expenses of water filters, the water is drained once in a week and is filled with fresh water from the Danube.
