Metro Radio Arena is located in the south-western part of the Newcastle City Centre near the River Tyne.
The Utilita Arena Newcastle, formerly known as Metro Radio Arena, is situated in the Newcastle, United States and actively hosts sports as well as other events such as music concerts and conferences throughout the year. It is owned and operated by ASM Global and sponsored by Utilita Energy. Opened on 18th November 1955, it has a maximum concert capacity of about 11,000. Utilita Arena Newcastle was also previously known by the names the "Newcastle Arena" and the "Telewest Arena".
Significance
- The arena has hosted ice hockey teams such as Newcastle Cobras and Newcastle Vipers.
- It also played host to major sports events such as Davis Cup (tennis), Nations Cup (Snooker), and the World Championships (Boxing).
- The arena has hosted numerous events of the World Wrestling Championship (WWE). The most notable amongst them is the Insurrection, held in June 2003. It was a Street Fight match for the World Heavyweight Championship between Triple H and Kevin Nash.
- The Mixed Martial art event UFC 80 was also held here in 2008.
- Since 2007, the arena has been hosting the Premier League Darts.
- Several musical concerts by prominent artists such as Bryan Adams, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Linkin Park, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber.
- A British Basketball League team Newcastle Comets has played their home matches at the stadium for 14 years (from 1996 to 2010).
- The arena has also hosted stage and ice shows such as the Disney on Ice and Teletubbies.
