The stadium was constructed in a natural bowl, located at the west side of the original stadium.
The Sun Bowl Stadium is regarded as one of the most beautiful outdoor football stadia of Ireland, located on the campus of the University of Texas, El Paso, constructed in 1963 at the cost of $275,000. The land was donated by the University to the El Paso County to build the stadium. It is the stamping ground for UTEP Miners of Conference USA and college football bowl game, the Hyundai Sun Bowl. It is designed in a bowl shape and has four levels of seating arrangement. The stadium is not covered from all the sides by stands. Apart from hosting various sporting events, it has also hosted numerous concerts of celebrities such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Ricky Martin, One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer, Kenny Chesney, and U2.
Significance
- In 2007, the stadium hosted an All-star college football game, played between Texas team and The Nation team for the first time where the former lost the game by 20-24.
- In 2014, it hosted an event where the English-Irish band "One Direction" performed together with "5 Seconds of Summer".
- The area of the stadium was extended for the first time in 1982 to increase the seating capacity.
- The stadium was named after the first game it hosted which was the Sun Bowl Game, a college football bowl game which was held in September 1963 between Texas Western and North Texas State.
- In 2016, the stadium hosted the simulcast of the Mass held by Pope Francis during his visit to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
