This horse racing track has the only helipad open for civilians in South Mumbai.
Located in Mumbai, India, the Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a famous horse racing track, built on the marshy land known as the Mahalaxmi Flats. The track is oval in shape and located right in the heart of the city of Mumbai. Built in 1883, the land on which the venue stands had been donated by Sir Cusrow N Wadia. At present, the venue is managed by the Royal Western India Turf Club, that has taken the land on lease. The race course is famous for conducting McDowell's Indian Derby Horse races and is counted amongst the greatest horse race courses in India. It is open to civilians for walking, Yoga and even Tai-chi. One can also learn horse riding here.
Significance
- Horse races are conducted at this venue between November and April every year. More than a hundred horses are trained here for the racing seasons.
- Classic Indian races such as the 1000 Guineas, the Derby, the 2000 Guineas, the Oaks and the St Leger are conducted at this venue.
- Aerial acrobatics are also performed around the horse racecourse on non-racing days with the help of motorized radio-controlled planes.
- Popular British singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran has performed at this venue on 1st May 2015 as a part of his X World Tour.
