Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is a well-known racing circuit, located in Francorchamps, Belgium. Considered as one of the most challenging race tracks in the world, the circuit hosts many racing events including the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix, Spa 24 Hours and the 1000 km Spa endurance races. It was designed by Jules de Thier and Henri Langlois Van Ophem in 1920. The circuit has 19 turns and involves the local streets of the Malmedy and Stavelot.

Trivia

Though the circuit is named as Spa, it is not located in Spa but the vicinity of the town of Francorchamps.

Significance

The first car race at the circuit was held in 1922 and the first Grand Prix racing in 1925.
The course is located in the area of an unpredictable weather. The circuit often comes up with incidents where one part of the course has clear and bright weather while another stretch is rainy and slippery.
At the 1960 Belgian Grand Prix, two drivers- Alan Stacey and Chris Bristow were killed within fifteen minutes of the race.
It has also hosted all events of the Volkswagen and 25 Hours of Spa which were organized by the Uniroyal Fun Cup.
The Circuit de Spa hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix for a total of six times (in 1925, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1939 and 1946).
The circuit was dropped from the Formula One calendar in 2006 because the organizer could not gather enough funds to host the event.
