The first game at the stadium was a Cape Town derby between the Ajax Cape Town and Santos on 23rd January 2010. Around 20,000 spectators witnessed the inaugural game.
The Cape Town Stadium is located in Cape Town, South Africa between the Signal Hills and the Atlantic Ocean. It was mainly constructed to host matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is also known by the name Green Point Stadium. It is the home to the Premier Soccer League club Ajax Cape Town (since 2010) and Cape Town City F.C. (since 2016). The construction work commenced on 26th March 2007 and took two years to complete, built by South African construction contractors Murray & Roberts. It was finally opened to spectators on 14th December 2009.
Significance
- The stadium hosted many significant matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup including five first round matches, one second round match, one quarter-final and one semi-final.
- The stadium hosted its first exhibition game on 17th November 2010 between South Africa and USA. South Africa lost the match by 1-0. The match was played for the Nelson Mandela Challenge Trophy.
- On 6th February 2010, Cape Town Stadium hosted another derby between local rugby teams, the Vodacom Stormers and the Boland Inv. XV. It was a match of the Cape Town Rugby Festival.
- On March 22, 2010, the stadium hosted a religious gathering named the "Cape Town for Jesus". This was the first major non-sporting event hosted by the stadium.
- On 10th April 2010, the stadium was used in the night for the first time while conducting an International Under-20 Soccer Challenge between Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, and Brazil. The stadium welcomed around 40,000 spectators to the final event.
- The stadium hosted the World Rugby Sevens Series in December 2015.
- It has also hosted several big concerts with a mesmerizing performance of famous bands and artists such as Coldplay, Linkin Park, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Eminem, and One Direction.
