The Azadi Stadium is a much-publicized all-seater football stadium, located in Tehran, Iran. From 1971 to 1979, the stadium was called the Aryamehr Stadium. The construction of the stadium started on 1st October 1970. The chief architect involved in the construction of the stadium was Abdol-Aziz Mirza Farmanfarmaian. After three years, the Azadi Stadium was finally opened for spectators, on 18th October 1973. An estimated amount of €400,163,944 was spent on its construction. The stadium underwent renovation in 2002 and took a year to get refurnished. The entire field of the Azadi Stadium has been installed with Desso GrassMaster. The stadium is owned by the Azadi Sports Complex and operated by MSYA and the Tehran Municipality. The Azadi Stadium has been the home ground for the Esteghlal F.C. and the Persepolis F.C. since 1973. It has also been the home for the Iran national football team since 1975.

Trivia

The former name of the stadium, Aryamehr means "Light of the Aryans" while Azadi stands for "freedom" in Persian. The stadium has been named so after the Iranian Revolution of 1979.
The Azadi Stadium is the 10th largest association football stadium in the world.

Significance

The Azadi Stadium played host to the 1974 Asian Games for which it was mainly built.
It hosted the 1976 AFC Asian Cup.
The stadium hosted the AFC Champions League final in 1999 and 2002.
The stadium was selected to host the 2004 and 2008 West Asian Football Federation Championship.
Frank Sinatra held a concert at the Azadi Stadium in November 1975.
In May 2013, the stadium hosted the Ferdousi festival which was organized by Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization.
The Azadi Stadium has also hosted the 2015 Women's Islamic Games.
