Ak Bars Arena, formerly known as Kazan Arena is one of the prime football venues of Kazan, located in Prospekt Khusaina Yamasheva. The arena is the home ground of Rubin Kazan that competes in the Russian Premier League. The construction work to build the stadium began in May 2010 and took around three years to complete. Populous, a global architectural firm presented the architectural design of the arena.
Significance
- The stadium has hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Universiade 2013.
- In 2015, the arena witnessed the significant events of the World Aquatics Championships. The football pitch of the arena was replaced by two swimming pools to host the swimming events.
- The arena has been selected to host matches of the FIFA World Cup of 2018.
- It has also hosted four matches of FIFA Confederations Cup, including the semi-final match which was witnessed by 40,855 spectators.
