Cross-country Skiing - Gloves

Gloves in skiing don’t fall in the category of protective gear but are an essential part of the uniform. Ideally, gloves are used to cover the hands in winters, and they are popularly known as mittens. Apparently, in professional skiing, mittens won’t do the work of a professional pair of gloves. The gloves used in these competitions are specially designed to give the athlete dexterity so that they can handle the gears nicely.

The footwork in skiing is crucial, and it is supported by the hands that maintain the balance in the snow. Therefore, the gloves used during skiing events, irrespective of the discipline hold a vital significance. 

Components of Skiing Gloves

A pair of gloves used by the skiers have the below-mentioned components:

Palms: The finger, palm, and thumb region of the glove are made with leather or synthetic material, depending upon the cost. Here, the sensations quotient is essential. The leather comes with durability and the chances of the edges getting cut diminish. However, the leather material needs proper care and cleaning. 

Lining / Liners: The gloves add comfort and a cosy feeling from inside. They have the moisture-wicking feature to soak the sweat of palms and fingers. The thickly padded gloves have several layers of the lining that could create trouble in gripping. However, as per the rules issued by FIS, the thickness of the gloves should be 5mm at maximum. 

Warmers: For the athlete with cold hands, there are mitts-feel gloves that are warmer than usual. These gloves have an extra lining to provide extra warmth. Also, the manufacturers attach the same with caution so that dexterity isn’t disturbed. 

Cuffs: The cuffs of ski gloves come in two types. The short cuff gloves are worn under the jacket so that the jacket can lock the warmness. Others are some extra short cuffs that are specially designed to fit closely and keep the snow out. 

Cinch Straps: These are the velcro grip that fastens the tight-to-fit elastic on the top of the glove. This helps the glove remain intact even after getting wet. It keeps the snow out and gloves locked.

• Gloves act as a protective covering against ice-cold weather and other external forces. 
• The gloves are a critical piece of uniform. 
• The glove size should be according to the hand size. 
• The gloves that have fingers are allowed, and the rest are banned.
