The Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup are the two exceptions in the professional sports world that don't award any prize money to the players in spite of bringing in ample of money in sponsorship revenue.

The Ryder Cup is an international golf competition, held between the teams of Europe and the United States of America. It is a golf competition for men, held in every two years. Named in honour of the English businessman, Samuel Ryder (who donated the trophy), it was originally held between the teams of the United States and Great Britain. The tournament was inaugurated in the year 1927 and was held at the Worcester Country Club, in Massachusetts, US. In 1959, the Ryder Cup was a two-day competition, played over 36 holes.

Competition Format

The Ryder Cup follows the match-play format.
Two teams (each having twelve players) compete against each other. A total of 28 matches is performed over a span of three days.
The match-play is a playing format in which each team is awarded a point when a player or a representative of that particular team scores a hole.
It consists of a scoring system where every player can earn a maximum of 1 point for each hole they put the ball in.
The player with the lowest score gets 1 point for any given hole.
If the players are tied, then the hole is halved.
If there is a tie at the end of the final match, the players usually continue playing till one player wins a hole. This is known as "Sudden Death".
