Initially, the competition was used to be held in even numbered years but after the terrorist attacks in September 2001, it was shifted to be held in the odd numbered years.

The Presidents Cup is an international competition for men that comprises of a series of golf matches, played between the United States team and another international team (excluding Europe). The competition was first established and played in the year 1994 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. That year, the competition was won by the USA team.

Competition Format

The Presidents Cup follows the match-play format.
Each team has 12 players and one non-playing captain who is also a renowned figure in the golf world.
It is a type of scoring system wherein each team is awarded a point when a player or a representative of that particular team score a hole.
Match play consists of a scoring system where every player can earn a maximum of 1 point for each hole they put the ball in.
The player with the lowest score gets 1 point for any given hole.
If the players are tied, then the hole is halved.
That team needs only one more halved hole to win the match.
If there is a tie at the end of the final match, the players usually continue playing till one player wins a hole. This is also known as "Sudden Death".
