Ibero-American Championship is a biennial International athletics competition that is held every two years for all the athletics sports such as Shot Put, Hammer Throw, Javelin, Pole Vault and the other track and field sports. In this event the athletes participating represent the Ibero-American countries and also a number of other Spanish or Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.
More over men and women from the countries mentioned above. The first event of this competition began in the year 1983 at Barcelona, Spain.
Ibero-American Marathon or Half Marathon were also conducted separately but irregularly from the championship event but came to end after the last marathon event in the year 2011 as was decided by the association.
The competition was proposed to the International Association of Athletics Federations (“IAAF”) in 1982 when the Asociación Iberoamericana de Atletismo (“AIA”) was formed in Madrid, Spain. There were 22 countries (now 30 countries as of 2021) as signatories in the “AIA”.
After getting the official permission from the “IAAF” the countries in which the first three Ibero-American Championships would be held were also set, with Spain (1983), Chile (1985) and Ecuador (1987). The first Ibero-American Championship took place in the year 1983 at Barcelona, Spain.
