Legendary cricketer Ben Laughlin holds a record for taking the highest number of wickets in the league. Since 2011, he has performed in 95 BBL matches. -
In season 2018-19, the league introduced a bat flip (instead of a coin toss) for deciding who would bat/ball first.
The Big Bash League (BBL or Big Bash) is an Australian professional franchise Twenty20 cricket league, established in 2011 by Cricket Australia.
It is one of those T20 cricket leagues that are featured among the top ten domestic sports leagues in average attendance.
BBL matches are played during the Southern Hemisphere summer in December, January and February.
Among 8 teams in the tournament, 6 teams have won the title at least once. The Sydney Sixers is the most successful team of the league till now. They have won the title four times including successively for two years and reached the finals in six of the ten seasons.

- Adelaide Strikers
- Melbourne Renegades
- Sydney Thunder
Competition Format
- Since the establishment of the BBL in 2011, the tournament has been following the same format every year except the initial season.
- The initial BBL season had 28 group stage matches before expanding to 32 in the following season.
- Since the 2018-19 season, every team plays all other teams twice during a season, entirely 56 regular season matches before the final series.
- During the earlier seasons of the tournament, the group stage matches were divided into 8 rounds, where each round has 4 matches.
- Every team played 6 other teams once during the season and one team twice.
The finals structure was modified in the 2019–20 season which looked like this:

- The competition features 8 city-based franchises.
- Every State's capital city features one team, except Sydney and Melbourne; featuring two teams.
- On 6 April 2011, the names of teams and colours were officially announced.
- The Melbourne Derby and Sydney Derby matches are the most attended matches during the league.
Significance / Memorable Moments
- The legendary cricketer Jordan Silk who played for the Sydney Sixers gave his best and defeated Sydney Thunders in the BBL season 4. This move went viral on the internet. Silk also made a stunning one-handed catch against Brisbane Heat in the BBL season 3.
- Sixers, in their inaugural season, gained victory in 5 matches, lost 2 matches and qualified with the third place. After that, they won against Hobart Hurricanes in the semi-final before a successful win against Perth Scorchers at WACA (Western Australian Cricket Association).
- Brett Lee also called 'Binga' one of the best bowlers in cricket history performed exceptionally well in his final match in Magenta. It was in season 4 against the Perth Scorchers in Canberra where he showed a sheer combination of courage and enthusiasm. Lee was given a bowling task against Scorchers, requiring 8 runs to win in the last over. Seven runs from the first three deliveries, which dashed Sixers hopes, but Brett didn't give up. He bowled brilliantly against Nathan Coulter-Nile and after that Sam Whiteman first ball with an absolute cracker. Sixers defeated Scorchers in the final ball, with Brett Lee's outstanding performance with finishing figures of 3-25 off four overs.
- In season 4, Chris Green sprinted in from deep mid-wicket and hit the ball in the air. Silk plunged full length and caught the ball just millimetres above the ground. This catch was considered as one of the most memorable moments of the BBL.
