The first Inter-Provincial Twenty20 was played in 2007 in which Wayamba Elevens ( Sri Lankan first class cricket team) won, claiming their first title.

The Super Fours Provincial T20 Tournament is a Twenty20 Cricket competition, contested in Sri Lanka and held by Sri Lanka Cricket. The tournament was initially known as the "Inter-Provincial Twenty20". The Super Fours Provincial T20 Tournament is one of three Inter-Provincial Cricket tournaments, contested amongst different clubs of the country. In between 2008-2011, Inter-Provincial twenty20 became the major T20 tournament in Sri Lanka. It was outmoded by the Sri Lanka Premier League in the year 2012 but came back and took its place again in 2016 with a name "Super Fours Provincial T20 Tournament".

Competition Format

The new edition of the tournament comprises of five teams: Hambantota Troopers, Colombo Commandos, Galle Guardians, Kurunegala Warriors and Kandy Crusaders.
The Super Fours Provincial T20 Tournament follows round-robin and knockout formats.
A round-robin tournament is also known as an all-play-all tournament. It is the format wherein every players play each of the other contestants.
It is a fair way to derive a champion and is mostly used in competitions with a large number of rounds and a fixed number of participants.
The knock-out format is of the type where each player or contestant that loses a round/stage is eliminated from the tournament, immediately.
