The competition has been named in honor of Karsten Solheim, the Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer who first initiated for the tournament.

The Solheim Cup is a golf tournament for professional women golfers, held between the teams of the United States and Europe in every two years. The competition was first held in the year 1990, at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Florida, U.S.A. The captains of the team are recently retired professional golfers who have played Solheim Cup during their active career.

Competition Format

The tournament follows "match-play" format in which a team or player earn a point for a hole when bested the opponent.
The competition is held for three days, consisting of 8 foursome matches, 8 fourball matches, and 12 singles matches that are performed on the final day of the competition.
The U.S. team is chosen through a Point system.
