The first season of the tournament was played in 1989 between Uruguayan side and Argentinian side where the Uruguayan team won the title with a scoreline of 4-1.

The Recopa Sudamericana is an annual international club football competition, organized in South America by CONMEBOL since 1988. The tournament is also known as "Recopa Santander Sudamericana" for sponsorship reasons. The last year’s Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana's (which are South America's premier club competitions) winners compete in the tournament. The current champions of the tournament are Atlético Nacional. The most successful team of this tournament is Boca Juniors with a total of 4 titles. The tournament was named so by CONMEBOL after the extinction of Recopa Sudamericana de Clubes played in 1970 and 1971. The main sponsor of this tournament is Banco Santander (one of the biggest banks). The Recopa Sudamericana is one of the greatest tournaments, played in South America. It acts as a platform for the budding players of South America.

Competition Format

During the regular season, the teams play in a single table. Each team is allowed to play each other twice. One of these two games is at home and the other away from home.
From the year 1995, the "three points for a win" rule was aborted. A new system was started by FIFA in 1995. This system placed additional importance on wins. It was chosen by CONMEBOL. So the rules were changed and the teams now get 3 points for a win, 1 point if there is a draw and 0 points if there is a loss.
If both teams have the same points with two legs, then goal difference would be considered.
The final stage is a single-leg match. It usually takes place at a neutral venue.
Unlike other tournaments, the Recopa Sudamericana does not use the extra time. When the final single-leg match does not have a clear winner, the penalty shoot-outs will decide the winner of the game.
