The World Aquatics Championships, also known as the FINA World Championships, was first held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1973 and is now held every two years. The event was held every four years from 1978 to 1998, in the even years between the years of the Summer Olympics. Since 2001, the championship is held every two years in odd years. Athletes of all 209 members of FINA could participate in the competition.
