The World Triathlon, earlier known as the International Triathlon Union (ITU), is the world governing body for the competitive sports of triathlon, para-triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon and their other informal variants. Its responsibilities include formulating a uniform set of rules for everybody and organising world championships.
During the 1980s, the rapid development of multi-sports events like swim-bike-run (and hence the name, triathlon) brought the attention of the International Olympic Committee towards it, and they decided to form an association for triathlon and include it as an Olympic sport.
The international triathlon union was formed on April 1, 1989, after a meeting of thirty national federations was held as the first ITU Congress.
