The 2021 Tokyo Marathon has been postponed until after the 2020 Summer Olympics. According to the organizers, the decision of postponing has been implemented due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally, the race was going to be held on 7th March where 38,000 runners and top athletes were going to participate. But due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and restricted entry inside the country, the rules and schedules are shifted back to 17th October.
The Tokyo marathon is not the only tournament that is cancelled or scaled back as plenty of other worldwide marathons have faced the same consequences due to the pandemic. Even the 2020 Tokyo Marathon was organized with a lot of restrictions and with only 200 elite runners participating in the run. The organizers, however, insisted on opening the field on 23rd July 2021 with a specific number of spectators or entrants. But till now, many countries are facing the new wave of infection, and hence the entry of spectators still remains in doubt.
