The Olympic Stadium of Athens "Spyros Louis" was titled so after Spyros Louis, a Greek water-carrier who won a gold medal at the first modern-day marathon in the 1896 Summer Olympic Games.
The Olympic Stadium of Athens 'Spyros Louis' is located at Maroussi. It is the home field of three famous football clubs of Athens, namely Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens. The Greek government owns the Olympic stadium. Many important events took place in this ground including the opening and closing ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics, held on 13th August and 29th August respectively. This stadium was designed in 1979 and opened in 1982. On 27th September 2008, Madonna performed in front of 75,637 viewers at the arena. Pyx Lax (Greek rock band) also performed in front of 80,000 fans. It is considered as the highest attended Greek-band-concert. The stadium was widely renovated in between 2002-2004 for the 2004 Olympic Games.
Significance
- On 23rd May, the 2007 UEFA Champions League Final was held at the stadium between AC Milan and Liverpool where Milan won the championship by two goals.
- The football final and the athletics event at the 2004 Summer Olympics were hosted by the stadium. The opening ceremony was held here on 13th August 2004 and the closing ceremony on 29th August 2004.
- The 6th World Championship in Athletics was held on this ground between 1st August-10th August 1997.
- The Mediterranean Games were held in this stadium between 28th of June-12th of July 1991.
- On 3rd October 1988 the Amnesty International’s Human Right Now concert took place here. The show was mainly performed by Sting and Peter Gabriel along with Bruce Springsteen, the E Street Band, and many others.
