The Mediterranean Games are held between nations located around the Mediterranean Sea where Europe, Africa & Asia meet. Some countries such as Portugal, Andorra, San Marino, Serbia, and Kosovo exceptionally participate in these games. The idea of conducting these games was proposed in 1948 at the Summer Olympics by the then President of the Egyptian National Olympics Committee (NOC) & Vice-President of the IOC, Mohamed Taher Pacha. He presented the project to the International Olympic Committee members, with the aim of supporting the peace-making and unifying dimension of sports. It was first held in 1951, in Egypt. The event is organized according to the guidelines issued by the executive committee of International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM) and in coordination with the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC). As of 2017, 26 nations that are the member of the CJIM, participate in the Games.
