Famously known as "Monia the Bird", Tamara Ivanovna Manina is a retired artistic gymnast and a sports scientist from the Soviet Union. She was born in Petrozavodsk in 1934 and began practising gymnastics in 1944 at the Leningrad Young Pioneer Palace. She was popular among her teammates for her graceful and light vault performances.
During her junior career, she won the all-around event at the 1953 USSR Nationals and became a part of the USSR national team. Manina made her senior debut at the USSR Championships in the same year and obtained 12th position in the all-around event. Manina participated actively in several gymnastics competitions between 1953 and 1964 at national and international levels and earned many accolades. After the 1964 Olympic Games, she injured her ankle severely in Vienna and couldn’t continue training further and took retirement.
In the next phase of her life, Manina has been an international judge since 1971 and coached the French national gymnastics team in 1975. Apart from gymnastics, she is widely known for her scientific researches. After graduating from the Leningrad State Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics in 1965, she completed her Candidate of Science degree in 1969 from the prestigious Lesgaft State Institute of Physical Culture. She taught at the gymnastics department till 1973 in the same institute. Since then, she has published more than 40 methodical, scientific and science books.
