Camp Nou which is also referred as Nou Camp, is a football stadium, located at Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. The construction was started in 1954 that took around three years to complete. It is the largest stadium in Spain, as well as in Europe, and the third-largest association football stadium in the world that has hosted many international soccer events such as FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League Finals, and 1992 Summer Olympics. It is the home stadium of famous football clubs FC Barcelona and Catalonia National Football Team. The stadium was designed as Barcelona’s previous stadium Camp De Les Corts that could not be expanded. It underwent an expansion in 1980 for the FIFA World Cup of 1982. The stadium underwent renovation in 1993 during which the ground was lowered by 2.5 meters. Later on, it was planned to remodel the stadium on the 50th anniversary. Apart from hosting various national and international level soccer events, it has also hosted various concerts of famous artists such as Julio Iglesias, U2, and Michael Jackson.

Trivia

It was originally named as "Estadi del FC Barcelona" but the common name "Camp Nou" which is used officially is much-publicized.
It houses the second-most visited museum in Catalonia known as "FC Barcelona Museum" which was opened in 1984.

Significance

It had undergone an expansion in 1980 for the FIFA World Cup of 1982.
The stadium hosted a "mass" congregation in 1982 in honor of Pope John Paul II when he was declared an honorary citizen of Barcelona.
For its services and functionalities in season 1998–99, UEFA rated Camp Nou as a five-star stadium.
The official name of the stadium was changed from "Estadi del FC Barcelona" to "Camp Nou" as chosen by fans during a poll which was conducted in 2000.
In 2014, it hosted the top 14 final matches of France's professional Rugby Union league conducted by ‘Ligue Nationale de Rugby’ (LNR). The previous attendance record of Rugby Union match was broken here with a total of 99,124 people.
